Increased Smartphone penetration – MTS

27 April 2013 1,186 views No Comment

MTS is to increase the Smartphone penetration. There will be no support for RUIM-less imported CDMA Smartphone and for market-ready Rev B Smartphone. Without supporting imported RUIM-less Smartphone, Smartphone penetration won’t be possible with some low-end affordable Smartphone (MTag series). Rev B enabled Smartphone are rarely found.

MTS Launches MTag 3.1 and MTS Livewire Android Smartphones

Sistema Shyam Teleservices, operating under MTS India brand, is planning to maximize operations with new investments to strike the growing data market. They will also roll out LTE in India in 2-3 years. MTS has launched MTS branded CDMA Smartphone – Mtag. Some already launched MTag smart phones in India include Livewire, 3.1, 401, 351, 352, 353 and 281. MTS offers pocket friendly Smartphone, sub-10K range, enabling the customers to opt data services.

But with these economical MTS phones, there are other high end and mid range Smartphone in the market too, which diminish the former. MTS has launched only one high end handset i.e. HTC Pulse running on Android 2.1. MTS has no mid or high range Smartphone, owing to its disturbed business in India.

But there is a wider market for imported CDMA Smartphone. They come from US with the best hardware and latest Android version. There prices are reasonable too but without warranty. Surprisingly, MTS users cannot use these Smartphone. They do not have a RUIM slot. All the programming takes place on phone’s internal memory. Programming is possible over other CDMA operators like Reliance and Tata. These can send some required files over the air (OTA) when you dial *228 from your phone. But MTS does not have BTS servers which can send these files over the air. There is no date provided by MTS as to when it will offer this, but without offering this MTS will miss some high ARPU customers.

It has been in the news that MTS will launch LTE-FDD network over 800MHz band. LTE800 is not new. It is set up in Australia and European countries. Market ready LTE800 supported Smartphone are available in market. LTE will come in long time future, at the moment it lays in Rev A expansion and Rev B roll out from Jaipur to top cities in the 9 circles. It is doubtful either the Rev B Smartphone are easily available in the market or no.

MTS has to open itself to all options and should work upon it.
